Jean-François Millet's birthplace
A painter of global influence, Jean-François Millet was born in the hamlet of Gruchy, in Gréville-Hague, La Hague, on October 4, 1814, into a very pious and relatively well-off peasant family. His birthplace offers a visitor experience that blends original works, everyday objects, agricultural tools, and audiovisual presentations about the life and work of the Norman painter.
From the common room evoking Jean-François Millet's childhood, through landscapes, agricultural and domestic scenes, the museum presents the major events and artistic life that marked the 19th century. His birthplace thus allows visitors to discover the painter's life, his essential work in art history, and his global influence.
Created around 1830 by an English landscape architect, it is a delightful listed park of romantic inspiration, designated a "Remarkable Garden". The waterways have been used to create waterfalls, a fountain, and a pond. The valley below is open to offer a view towards the sea, while the surrounding hillsides are planted with deciduous and coniferous trees.
The castle's setting seems enclosed, like an island of calm and beauty, within a wooded crown that isolates it from the world. In 1857, Alexis de Tocqueville wrote to a friend, "I was at my brother Hippolyte's the day before yesterday. They have spent enough money and taste at Nacqueville to make this place one of the prettiest in the world.".
This Traveler's Garden houses a collection of evergreen trees and shrubs, including many Asian and Mediterranean species. A series of verdant rooms, benefiting from an original orientation, it faces 180 degrees towards the sea.
The Vauville Botanical Garden, in addition to a recognized scientific collection, forms the original setting for the Château de Vauville, a jewel of North Cotentin architecture, whose tower dates from the 12th century and the two wings from the second half of the 17th century.
The garden is a tribute from his wife and friends (Yves Montand, Ursula Vian, Juliette Gréco, Picasso, etc.) who each planted a tree there. Designated a "remarkable garden" in 2004, it is located in the Valley of the Mills, opposite Port-Racine.
Maison Jacques Prévert is the last home in which the artist lived from 1971 to 1977. The Jacques Prévert house is both an artist's house where we walk in the footsteps of Jacques Prévert and a museum presenting original works and exhibitions. The discovery of the house is made for a free visit of a duration of 1 hour to 1:30 am.
