The Covered Alley of the Poked Stones
The covered alley of Vauville is one of the emblematic sites of the Neolithic period.
Located at an altitude of 134 meters in the commune of Vauville, the covered alley of Pierres Pouquelées is a megalith built by Neolithic people. It is a collective burial site.
It consists of two rows of Silurian quartzite stones facing each other and standing upright. This rock is found all around the site in the Vauville valley. On top of these are two large blocks of granodiorite stone that come from a distant deposit.
According to a petrographic study, these rocks come from a deposit located 2.7 km from the megalith, which, in addition to the altitude, would testify to the importance given to this monument by those who built it.
In 1830, the inhabitants of Vauville wanted to recover these stones to build a new bridge, but the sub-prefect at the time demanded that the stones be returned to the site. The inhabitants brought the stones back but did not replace them in their original configuration.
The site has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1854.
