The Vauville Pond
The Vauville pond, one kilometer long and 300 meters wide, lies behind a thin coastal dune ridge. Despite its coastal location, it is currently a freshwater pond, giving it a remarkable ecological role.
The pond has existed for almost 6,000 years, after having functioned as a lagoon for the last 3,000 years.
The water comes from runoff over the nearby hills and cliffs, composed of Ordovician sandstone and schist, which are considered relatively impermeable. Therefore, the pond's water level is strongly influenced by local rainfall.

Classified as a National Nature Reserve since 1976, the pond is recognized for its significant biological importance, with nearly 2,265 species present on the site. In conjunction with a decision-making management committee, it is currently managed by the Normandy Ornithological Group, whose missions range from monitoring and prevention to scientific research, the pond being an important area for biological study, particularly for the understanding and development of amphibians.
