Three books highlighting the geological heritage of La Hague have just been published: the guide " Geological Curiosities of the La Hague Geopark" and a geological map, published by the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM), and "The Architecture of La Hague – A Heritage Legacy," published by OREP. They aim to transmit the scientific knowledge necessary to understand this exceptional territory.
Located at the Pointe du Cotentin, the Hague peninsula belongs to the Armorican massif. Mosaics, its landscapes are both linked to the diversity of the subsoil, rich by more than two billion years of earth history, and inherited from men and women who have shaped them and who continue to do so.
In order to transmit the scientific knowledge necessary for a better understanding of this territory and animated by the desire to highlight the natural, cultural and intangible heritage of the territory in order to promote education, science and culture, the Hague is based on scientific partners in order to have specific knowledge tools to its territory.
Thus 3 works have just been published:
- The Geological Curiosities of the La Hague Geopark guide published by BRGM
- A geological map by Brgm editions
- The architecture of La Hague – A heritage to be passed down, published by OREP.
Before describing twenty-five geological sites in La Hague, this guide reviews the major rock types (sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic), all represented here. It lays the groundwork for their formation, explaining orogenic cyclesandplate tectonics. The geological history of Cap de La Hague is then recounted with illustrations, before moving on to the exploitation of La Hague's rocks since human settlement; rocks and landscapes that have also been a source of inspiration for artists. The guide also explains the natural hazards facing La Hague. Finally, a section dedicated to the landscapes and natural environments of La Hague highlights the links between the mineral and living organisms.
This “Geological Curiosities” collection also makes it possible to meet the expectations of hikers and visitors to the Geoparc La Hague.
The guide is on sale in Tourp in particular, at € 19.

Hague architecture - a heritage heritage
Inhabited since prehistoric times, the Hague peninsula was shaped by the women and men who succeeded each other. This territory, rural and coast, is characterized by a mosaic of reliefs, agricultural and natural environments, a diversity of landscapes and architectures which give it a singular identity. Its numerous villages and dispersed hamlets still maintain ancient constructions testifying to the social origin of the inhabitants, traditional know-how as well as lifestyles and past economic activities. Its architectural heritage also reflects the richness of its geological subsoil. The sandstones, the arkoses, the shales, the granites or the gneiss used thus make it possible to distinguish such a hamlet of another.
This work invites readers to discover the diversity of the built heritage of the Hague, whether buildings for domestic, religious use, agricultural and artisanal buildings, hydraulic works or equipment linked to fraud and smuggling.
The book is on sale in Tourp in particular, at 25 €.
